What is A-SPEC ?

In short

A-SPEC is a common specification for the supply of digital data relating to 'As Constructed' infrastructure assets — a suite of specifications supporting the delivery of machine-readable data, forming the foundation of a Digital Twin.

A-SPEC has been developed within a consortium of local and state government agencies, utility organisations, and software manufacturers to ensure the data captured is the correct data.

How it's governed

A-SPEC is controlled by clear governance arrangements and change management protocols. This collective approach ensures every consortium member's interests are considered as the specifications evolve — enhancements are driven by the user Community, for the user Community.

Changes are initiated by suggestions from the A-SPEC Community and through research undertaken by GISSA. No changes are introduced without full consultation with the Community — members are contacted directly for comment on anything proposed.

How it fits with what you already use

A-SPEC does not directly compete with other products — it is not an asset management package. It complements existing and emerging asset management systems by providing data in standard formats. The consortium approach also identifies directions for improving existing capabilities.

  • Aligns with standards such as AS 5488-2013 and ISO 55000
  • Aligns with A Water Industry Guide for the Management of Asset Data using Uniclass, developed jointly by WSAA and BIM4Water
  • Is agnostic in terms of graphics format
  • Does not dictate data models — it simply provides the correct information for inclusion in clients' systems
  • Is a productivity enhancement tool, streamlining the flow of data from designer to builder to asset manager, minimising duplicated data capture and manipulation
  • Provides a framework that clearly identifies each participant's responsibilities
